Ernie Ball's How To Play Guitar Methods have been a standard at the shop for several decades. They work through both note reading and chord playing.
Phase 1 teaches the notes on the first 3 strings along with most basic open chords.
Phase 2 teaches the notes on strings 4, 5 & 6 along with barre chords.
